Growing Alberta

Three Autumn Events

• The flurry of farmers’ market season

is winding down, but don’t despair. If you

are in Calgary or Edmonton this October, look for the 2008 Rocky Mountain

Wine & Food Festival. A tasty trade show, the festival showcases wines and spirits from around the world and offers up the best that the province’s restaurants have to offer. Where & when: Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre, October 23-25, and Calgary’s Stampede Park Roundup Centre, October 16-18

• Culinary Team Alberta is travelling to Erfurt, Germany this fall to add to its already substantial collection of Culinary Olympic medals.

The 18-strong group comprises managers, a support crew, coaches and other members, including such chefs as Patrick Gayler, saucier from Calgary’s Catch Restaurant and Scott Ards, senior chef de partie at Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre.

Where & when: Erfurt, Germany, October 19-22

• If you are not up to travelling to Germany or even dressing up for a heady evening of gastronomic goodies, why not pull on your windbreaker and head to some farms near you. The Alberta Farm Fresh Producers Association website lets you search by region to find a farm that offers farm gate sales or great autumn events, such as this one:

Where & when: Prairie Gardens’ Haunted Pumpkin Festival, near Bon Accord, weekends in October. (Don’t forget to try the corn maze, too.)
